Apple has reinitiated dialogue with OpenAI to potentially use its technology in upcoming iPhone functionalities. According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, these discussions focus on potential agreements and how OpenAI's technology could be integrated into iOS 18. This marks a resurgence of interactions between the two companies, following a period of minimal contact earlier this year. Although no definitive agreements have been reached yet, Apple remains open to forming partnerships with multiple providers including OpenAI, Google, or possibly other entities.
Separately, it is reported that Apple is also considering a partnership with Google to license the Gemini chatbot. The integration of generative AI into iOS 18 is a significant part of the forthcoming iPhone operating system upgrades, which may also include advancements developed from Apple’s own large language models.
In addition to these technical enhancements, Apple is exploring the addition of chatbot-like features, potentially similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. Gurman points out that Apple is particularly focused on ensuring these features offer superior privacy protections compared to those of competitors.
This development is highlighted ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where the company is expected to unveil new AI-driven software and services. Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the potential of technologies like OpenAI's ChatGPT, emphasizing a careful, issue-aware approach to AI integration that he promised would be "thoughtfully" implemented across Apple devices.
The involvement of external firms could potentially accelerate Apple's advancements in chatbot technologies while also minimizing associated risks. Insights into Apple’s comprehensive AI strategy are expected to be a highlight at the upcoming WWDC in June, where previews of major software updates will be presented.
