Tech News: WhatsApp Introduces Offline File Transfer Feature

SohaniSharma
WhatsApp is set to unveil a groundbreaking feature that will transform how users share files and connect with their contacts. The innovative function, named 'People Nearby', is currently in the testing phase within the latest WhatsApp Android beta version (2.24.9.22). This feature allows users to seamlessly share photos, videos, documents, and more, without requiring an internet connection. Leveraging the local network, 'People Nearby' empowers users to transfer files directly to nearby WhatsApp accounts, revolutionizing file-sharing capabilities.

To activate this feature, users simply need to grant necessary permissions, including enabling discovery by nearby users, accessing storage and media files, and connecting with other devices on the local network. Despite these permissions, users have full control and the ability to revoke them at any time.

One of the most compelling aspects of the 'People Nearby' feature is its end-to-end encryption, ensuring that file transfers maintain the same high level of security as WhatsApp messages and calls. Throughout the process, a user's phone number remains hidden, enhancing privacy and security.

The functionality of the 'People Nearby' feature is intuitive and reminiscent of the Quick Share option in other applications. It leverages the proximity of two devices, providing a dedicated screen where users can seamlessly view nearby devices and share files effortlessly. This feature is poised to elevate user interaction and redefine file-sharing within the messaging platform.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is also exploring additional updates, such as the ability to attach personalized notes to individual contacts. These enhancements, if well-received, are expected to become part of a future WhatsApp update, enriching the app's functionality and user experience.
